Profit rose 65%, but part of that is a year-ago exceptional item. Net profit was ₹124.39 crore against ₹75.42 crore, on revenue from operations up 18.2% to ₹2,263.29 crore. Q2 FY26 carried an exceptional item of ₹20.36 crore, and before it profit before tax rose 36.2%, to ₹166.93 crore from ₹122.56 crore, so about two-thirds of the profit growth is operating. The net margin was 5.45% against 3.91%.
More of what is sold is bought in. Purchases of stock-in-trade rose 55.6% to ₹1,411.51 crore while cost of materials consumed fell 23.2% to ₹327.41 crore, and inventories were built up by ₹149.57 crore against ₹23.45 crore a year ago. After the inventory change, goods cost about 70% of revenue against about 68% (derived), so the gross margin did not widen: the improvement in profit came from the lines below it, with employee benefits up a slower 13.1% to ₹186.89 crore against revenue up 18.2%. The filing does not explain the shift in sourcing.
Against Q1 FY27 revenue rose 1.3% but net profit fell 12.8% from ₹142.70 crore, taking the net margin to 5.45% from 6.32%. For H1 FY27 revenue from operations is ₹4,498.31 crore against ₹3,913.95 crore (+14.9%) and net profit ₹267.09 crore against ₹199.32 crore (+34.0%). Of the quarter's profit, ₹119.34 crore belongs to the owners and ₹5.05 crore to minority holders.

The subsidiaries are doing more of the earning. Standalone net profit is ₹110.04 crore (+57.0%) on revenue of ₹1,932.27 crore, about 85% of the group's (derived). Against Q1 FY27 the parent's revenue fell 4.5% and its profit 21.6% from ₹140.32 crore, a steeper fall than the group's, because the subsidiaries' contribution rose from about ₹2 crore of profit in Q1 to about ₹14 crore (derived as group less standalone).
Standalone finance costs doubled to ₹9.53 crore (+101.9%) and depreciation rose 12.5% to ₹30.06 crore, while the tax rate stayed at about 25.7%. The board also recorded the appointment of a new head of internal audit and risk assurance and a related senior appointment.
Inference
Crompton's profit growth is real but smaller than the headline: about a third of the 65% rise is the absence of last year's ₹20.36 crore exceptional item, and the margin gain came from operating costs, not from selling goods at a wider gross margin.
The filing does not say why the company bought in more finished goods or whether the lower June-to-September profit is seasonal; the next quarters would show whether the subsidiaries' higher contribution holds.
