Mangalore Refinery And Petrochemicals (NSE: MRPL) has received an order from the Additional Commissioner of Customs (Import), Andheri (E), Mumbai, raising a demand of ₹1,39,871 plus applicable interest and penalty over wrong classification of imported material, it said in a filing on 07 Nov 2026.

    What the order concerns

The order relates to erstwhile ONGC Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (OMPL), which imported some material during 2021. The department says the product was wrongly classified and has raised a demand for the 2021 period.

The filing says a penalty was imposed on the tariff classification of the imported product, and that no restriction or sanction was imposed. The order was received at 10:00 A.M. on 07 Nov 2026.

    The company's response

The company says it is considering challenging the order after depositing the money. The filing does not say whether the amount has been deposited, or when, and does not name the forum for any appeal.

The amount is small against the company's scale. Its latest quarter, Q2 FY27, reported consolidated total income of ₹35,639.91 crore and net profit of ₹1,900.76 crore.

What the customs order means for MRPL's shareholders

The order is a demand of ₹1,39,871 plus interest and penalty on 2021 imports, a sum that is small next to the company's reported figures. The company is considering a challenge, but the filing does not say what the interest and penalty amount to, whether the deposit has been made, or what the outcome of any challenge will be.
