TeamLease Services' university wins interim stay in EPFO provident fund case

TeamLease Services (NSE: TEAMLEASE) has said that the Gujarat High Court granted ad-interim relief to its subsidiary TeamLease Skills University, staying further proceedings by the EPFO under Section 125 of the Code on Social Security, 2020, it said in a filing on 23 Oct 2026. The stay applies until the next hearing.

What the court order does and does not decide

The High Court order dated 22 Oct 2026 was passed on an interim application filed by TeamLease Skills University (TLSU) in a pending writ petition. The application seeks a stay of proceedings the EPFO started against TLSU after a summons dated 29 Sep 2026. TLSU had replied that the High Court had already taken cognizance, but the EPFO listed the matter for hearing on 28 Oct 2026, which led TLSU to file the application.

The stay holds until the next date of hearing. The court also issued notice to the respondents, returnable on 1 Dec 2026, and permitted direct service of notice. The matter remains sub judice, so the filing does not say whether the court has ruled on whether NEEM trainees are covered by provident fund rules.

The underlying dispute and the company's position

The dispute concerns an EPFO order dated 11 Mar 2026 under Para 26B of the Employees' Provident Funds Scheme, 1952, which TLSU has challenged. In an affidavit-in-reply, the EPFO reiterates that NEEM trainees are covered as employees under Section 2(f) of the EPF Act, 1952. TLSU strongly disagrees with that affidavit and says it believes it has a strong case on the merits.

The company says there is no immediate or ascertainable financial impact as of the date of the annexure, because the Para 26B proceedings concern applicability and do not determine or quantify dues. The matter is disclosed as a contingent liability under Note 46.7 in the consolidated financial statements for FY25.

TeamLease Skills University is a public private university established in Gujarat in 2013. TeamLease Foundation, a subsidiary of TeamLease Services, is its sponsoring body. The company has made four earlier disclosures on this matter, on 6 May, 11 Aug, 3 Sep and 28 Sep 2026.

What the court order means for TeamLease Services' shareholders

The order is interim and does not decide the coverage question or any amount. The company says the matter has no immediate financial impact, and the order itself does not quantify provident fund dues, interest, damages or liability.

The filing does not say how much provident fund dues or damages are claimed, whether the stay will be extended after 1 Dec 2026, or what the effect on TLSU's operations would be if it is not. The next dated step is the hearing on 1 Dec 2026.
