Bharti Airtel (NSE: BHARTIARTL) has been penalised ₹1,07,000 by the Department of Telecommunications, Maharashtra LSA, for alleged violation of subscriber verification norms, it said in a filing on 04 Nov 2026. The notice was received on 3 Nov 2026, and the company has opted not to contest it and to pay.

    What the notice alleges

The notice follows a Customer Application Form Audit, known as a CAF Audit, which the Department of Telecommunications runs periodically to confirm that licensees comply with their licence terms. Under the License Agreement, the company must verify customers adequately before enrolling them as subscribers and must follow the department's instructions on that.

DoT conducted the CAF Audit for August 2026 and alleges a violation of the verification terms in the License Agreement. The company says the maximum financial impact is the penalty itself.

    The penalty in context

The amount is small against the company's scale. At the 04 Nov 2026 close of ₹2,067.60 a share, the company's market value was ₹12,59,913 crore, and its latest quarter, Q1 FY27, reported consolidated total income of ₹59,445.70 crore.

The filing is one of several recent legal filings. Blacklitt's data shows a 29 Oct 2026 and a 30 Oct 2026 filing of the same type, and earlier articles cover a DoT penalty over subscriber verification in Madhya Pradesh and a financial disincentive over the quarter ended Dec 2024. Those filings are separate matters and this one does not state how they relate.

What the penalty means for Bharti Airtel's shareholders

The company says the financial effect is limited to the penalty, and it has chosen to pay rather than contest it. The filing does not say how many subscribers were affected, whether the penalty has been paid, or what internal steps the company will take on verification. The filing gives no further dated step.
