Vedanta Iron And Steel Limited has told the exchanges that its subsidiary, ESL Steel Limited, became aware at about 3:00 PM on 14 Oct 2026 of a demand-cum-show cause notice from the office of the Superintendent, Central Tax, GST and Central Excise, Lathikata Range, Rourkela, after accessing it on the GST portal.
The department proposes to recover GST of ₹7,77,094, made up of CGST of ₹3,88,547 and SGST of ₹3,88,547, for alleged short payment of GST under the reverse charge mechanism on contributions to the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) and the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) for FY2022-23, along with interest and penalty.
ESL is examining the notice and will respond within the prescribed time. The company says it does not expect any significant financial or operational impact.
Inference
The amount is about ₹7.8 lakh, which is very small for a steel company, and the notice is a step before a decision, so it is not yet a confirmed liability. It is disclosed because the rules require certain notices received by subsidiaries to be reported.
The issue concerns how GST applies to mining-related contributions, which could be relevant to other companies in the sector. Shareholders may want to follow whether the notice is confirmed or withdrawn, though the amount suggests a limited effect.
