Maruti Suzuki India Limited has told the exchanges that it received an order from the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) covering eight assessment years: FY2013-14 to FY2019-20 and FY2021-22. The company says the issues have been largely decided in its favour, with a positive tax impact, including interest, of about ₹13,000 crore (₹130,000 million).
Following the order, the company says it will reduce mainly the interest component of the contingent liability it carries, by about ₹6,300 crore (₹63,000 million). It will file an application with the jurisdictional Assessing Officer to give effect to the order.
The company states that there is no major impact on its financials, operations or other activities due to the order. The filing is dated 15 Oct 2026.
Inference
A contingent liability is an amount a company may have to pay if a dispute goes against it, and it is disclosed in the accounts rather than booked as an expense. Reducing it by about ₹6,300 crore means the amount the company discloses as possibly payable would fall, which is separate from profit.
The order still has to be given effect by the Assessing Officer, and the department could challenge it in a higher forum, which the filing does not discuss. Shareholders may want to watch how the company describes the contingent liability in its next results and whether the matter is appealed.
